Thursday 15 June 2017 Nafplion

Arrive in Nafplion around 8 pm on Wednesday evening. Docked alongside a large square where there a couple of groups of young teenagers player their boy/girl games. This town is a little different from what we’ve seen so far, a little less Greek and more European. Some of the passengers went into town tonight as we are here overnight.

Dea and I decided to stay on the boat and we’ll check out the town tomorrow.

I decided to do the tour of Mycenea a walled palace of the ancient Greek hero Agamemnon. Dea decided to take the Hop on/Hop off bus tour of the town and do some shopping. We both thought it was time to spend some time apart.

Mycenea is an interesting site in that there is a fully intact, unrefurbished domed tomb that over 3,500 years old, a museum from artefacts found in the archaeological  site of the town and the the ruins of Mycenea.

The entrance and the interior of the domed tomb The plinth at the doorway weighs approx 300 tonnes and the triangle above was there way of keeping the stress off the middle of the plinth. The place has always been uncovered and was used until recently as a barn for the local farmers.

The Lions Gate is the entrance to the Mycenean site. This was pretty impressive considering like the tomb it has never been covered in over 3,500 years. Had a walk around the site, but I’m over looking at ancient piles of rocks.

Walked back to bus where it it had been parked and I wasn’t the only one not that impressed. The fresh orange juice from the mobile vendor was certainly appreciated. It was a very hot and for the first time quite dry.

Bussed back to boat just before lunch. Went looking for Dea but she was still on the bus according to some of the other passengers. Had a coffee with a couple from Guernsey. Nice older couple, John reminds me of my Dad. About the same age and was a merchant seaman until recently. Dea returns from her bus trip and it’s lunch on the boat today.

Shortly after lunch we’re on our way to Hydra.
